Dr Michelle Locke works at Counties Manukau District Health Board part time. Her clinical work is focused on breast reconstruction for women with breast cancer or several congenital abnormalities. She also performs microsurgery, skin cancer surgery and acute hand surgery.

Outside of her clinical commitments, she contributes to the teaching programme for the registrars (doctors training to be Plastic Surgeons) and to administration within the department.

Dr Michelle Locke trained at the University of Auckland School of Medicine. She returned to the University to undertake her MD by thesis during her surgical training. In 2013, she was appointed Senior Lecturer in Surgery (Plastics) by the Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at the University of Auckland.

Senior Lecturer in Surgery (Plastics)

Dr Michelle Locke took up an academic appointment with the Department of Surgery in the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences in 2013. Her academic time is split between research, teaching and University administration.

Her research is undertaken in conjunction with other University and clinical researchers. She is hosted by the Dunbar laboratory at the School of Biological Sciences, University of Auckland. She heads Plastic Surgery research at South Auckland Clinical Campus. Her teaching commitments include propagating Plastic Surgery and Skin Cancer knowledge within the Year 4 medical student curriculum as well as taking hands on, practical skills sessions with Year 6 (final year) medical students learning how to excise skin lesions and suture wounds. Dr Locke supervises University students undertaking Summer Studentships, Research Options, and advanced research degrees such as PhDs. As part of her administrative responsibilities she sits on the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences Phase 2 and Phase 3 Curriculum Groups, the Electives sub-committee and the Phase 3 Board of Examiners.
